In Grade 7 Spanish, the students have been studying about Semana Santa (Holy Week). The students focused on the celebration and traditions in Antigua Guatemala. One of the things they learned about were the alfombras. They are rugs made from colored sawdust, flowers, dried fruits and vegetables. During Holy Week there are processions with floats commemorating the passion, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The floats depict scenes of Jesus carrying his cross. The processions walk on the alfombras that have been made in the streets. The ‘alfombras’ disappear as the processionals pass along the route, and participants immediately begin making new ones for processionals yet to come. As part of an interdisciplinary unit, students have re-created their own version of these alfombras. When students walked into the church for the Living Stations, all students participated in the custom and walked on the alfombras.
